wild forest estate hideaway

'Drink the wild Air'
Wild Forest Hideaway is the oldest human made thing on the property. It’s a mix of peace and calm in a secluded slice of the Kauri Coast. There’s space here.

The 110 year old Historic Kauri Bushman's Cottage is self-contained but attached to our house - a beautifully considered addition built in the ‘80s. It’s located next to the stream that comes from a spring a few clicks up the road. It’s surrounded by native forest.

100% linen bedding / curtains / and velvet cushions, an outdoor cast iron bath, a swing chair by the stream, a large dining table and a hammock on the covered deck. The secret garden is visible only from here. Three levels, flowers year round, made by the architect's partner and tending itself now.

Trounson Kauri Park is 3km up the road - a 40-minute walking loop through ancient Kauri forest, one of the best places in the world to see kiwi in the wild after dark. We can lend you a red torch. Tāne Mahuta is a half-hour north. Kai Iwi Lakes and Aranga Beach are close.

A converted shipping container at the top of the property just above the tree line. We’ll take you up through the forest in the electric golf cart.

Completely off-grid. A queen bed, 100% linen, a well-equipped kitchen, bathroom, and a covered deck with a fire pit, hammock and Cape Cod chairs. Rain is never a reason to go inside.

At night, in the hammock, with no light anywhere nearby, the Milky Way is complete. The outdoor bath puts you under all of it. You'll be soaking under the stars, above the forest.

Like a magic carpet ride in the canopy of the forest.

A 100+ year old Kauri villa was about to be torn down. We hurried in and spent the next week rescuing French doors, sarking & weatherboards, windows, flooring and even the shower fittings. We used what we saved to build a space that sits at the forest's midpoint - nestled into the slope so that with all sets of French doors open, you're not looking down at the canopy, you're living inside it.

The copper shower pipe, the vintage taps on the outdoor cast iron bath, the French doors - everything has had a life before this place. You can feel it.

Three decks. Outdoor bath and outdoor kitchen. Off-grid.
