“The Sunday School & The Warehouse: A turnkey lifestyle property in Northland, NZ”

Our Story

When we first stepped inside this building, it was neglected — orange carpet, low ceilings, tattered curtains. But beneath that, we felt the energy. We imagined yoga retreats, family gatherings, spaces for ceremony and deep healing.

Years later, those visions have come true. This property has held Māori wellness retreats, international yoga gatherings, nourishing shared meals, and countless romantic getaways. We poured our hearts into it — infusing wabi-sabi simplicity, warmth, and authenticity.

Now, it’s ready for its next kaitiaki (guardian).

Wabi-Sabi Design Philosophy

Eco River Retreat embraces the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi — celebrating simplicity, imperfection, and the quiet beauty of natural materials.

  • Recycled timbers and raw textures

  • Terracotta-tiled bathrooms and handmade details

  • Light-filled, uncluttered spaces designed to breathe

  • A kitchen with Beautility Style joinery, walk-in pantry, gas cooking, and a wood-burning fireplace for slow meals

This is not polished perfection — it’s honest, soulful living.

    • Shared values: At a community meeting, residents described themselves as “respectful, wise, carrying mana, not taking any nonsense, and always supporting each other.”

    • Natural environment: The people of Donellys Crossing value and protect their surroundings in an environment that is beautiful, unspoilt, tranquil, and richly native. We are surrounded by clean air, pristine rivers, and clear starry skies

What Guests Are Saying - The Warehouse

Joanna and Nigel have created a beautiful collection of spaces within the warehouse, that make it feel seperate yet connected. Loads of lovely soft furnishings to wrap up and get cosy in. It’s in a lovely location, close to some of our beautiful forests, which are well worth the visit. We love the ethos of Wild Forest Estate and we look forward to staying with them again before long!

Adele Airbnb Rating, 5 stars January 2025

What a magical stay! Such thoughtfully curated space. We'll certainly be back. Joanna and Nigel were so welcoming with excellent communication and were on hand for any questions or needs. I'd highly recommend this spot for anyone looking to relax, connect with nature and with loved ones. We particularly loved the record player / sound system, great WiFi for working remotely and the beautiful crockery. We enjoyed every minute and can't wait to come back ❤️

Ruawai Airbnb Rating, 5 stars October 2024

Oh my gosh, the most beautiful place I’ve ever stayed! Fell absolutely in love with this space and didn’t want to leave! Our car didn’t want to either after a silly little parking mistake, however Joanna and Nigel were simply amazing and helped us to get it unstuck ❤️ The most perfect place to stay inside on a rainy day, read books, listen to records, play card games and just simply connect with each other. Would recommend this place in a heart beat.

What guests are saying - The Sunday School

  • We spent two days there. It was just great and I have to admit that I'm not so easy to please. The decor is neat and thoughtful. The house is extremely well-equipped. Linens are washed linen. The colors are harmonious. Very private space. The house is surrounded by nature, during the day the landscape is sublime and at night the sky is ultra starry. Don't hesitate for a second. Stay there for at least three nights. I could have stayed a week. Thank you!

  • Joanna's place was filled with care and consideration. Lovely retro decor, luxury bed linen and great colour combos. A sanctuary close to the kauri forest. We felt right at home and enjoyed cooking our meals in the well thought out kitchen with plenty of utensils. Joanna also organised massages for us on the last day with Feur and Jed. And they were exceptional. We had such a lovely nurturing weekend away!

  • If you're looking for the most incredible escape to a quiet town where you can truly disconnect from reality... This. Is. It. The picturesque river is so close you can hear it running from the kitchen where there's a cozy fire that not only keeps you toasty but you can cook on too! How good! There's an awesome combo of historical, unique, and super cute art work which give the place a life of it's own. Let’s not forget that rainfall shower! Absolutely could have spent all day in there! 100% recommended!

Excellent occupancy rate with 5 star reviews on Airbnb Sunday School + Warehouse

  • A space that welcomes creatives who need time for rest and renewal.

It’s a stay that's brimming with nostalgia and vintage charm, an eclectic space where guests can find solace and inspiration in its joyful interiors.

The Sunday School has been renovated with an eco conscious philosophy. Designed by Architect Barry Rusden in the 1980's as a Church with a modest black corrugated iron exterior houses a beautifully restored and considered interior.

Original concrete floors are a perfect foil for the earthy pink and terracotta interior palette The generous spaces, high stud and large windows create a very relaxing light filled and airy atmosphere. The handmade Matakana clay hexagonal terracotta tiled shower has beautiful exposed copper plumbing. The Queen size bed is made with 100% linen sheets and pure wool duvet.

The Sunday School also has a dressing room and a study with a work desk and a day bed. The kitchen has been designed in line with the Beautility philosophy we are fans of: utility combined with beauty.

The living space has a vintage oak dining table, a wood burning fireplace and huge comfy velvet Chesterfield sofa and chairs to relax in. A large deck to the North West with outdoor dining table looks out over a wild field and the Waima river.

A world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday city life, it's a place that bestows a sense of clarity. A place where, rather than rushing through the hours of the day, you're soaking in every moment for all it's worth.

  • This dreamy and highly romantic getaway sits on the outskirts of a tiny historic Northland village. Set in nature on the banks of the Waima river and well off the beaten track. The stylish interior has a luxurious tent bedroom with pure linen bedding, a library, a record player and multiple lounging areas, and has been designed for complete relaxation.

    An experience of a lifetime.

The Warehouse is a 130 sq m open plan space. We've captured the camping vibe of the retreat we run just up the road and bought it inside and added another level of comfort.

There are no curtains to obstruct your connection with the trees and sky outside. The romantic tent bedroom can be fully enclosed to provide privacy. There are several different nooks - the mid-century style library, three comfortable lounge areas including a huge green velvet sofa, a record player with a vinyl collection, a very basic kitchenette made from recycled Kauri, and a dining area featuring a huge recycled Kauri dining table. This place really lends itself to platter and picnic style meals.

The space features many vintage treasures collected over years. A wonderful space for fans of vintage, textiles and colour.

  • Combine The Sunday School and The Warehouse and you have The Retreat. The bunkroom as big double doors leading into both ends and the retreat becomes a connected and communal space. When its not being used as a retreat the bunkroom creates a sound /privacy buffer between the two appartments. It can sleep up to 12 guests.

  • Te Rau Aroha Alignment was a amazing experience this week held at the amazing @wildforestestate where we were greeted by the most stunning venue. We were surrounded by so much aroha with all the personal touches created by our hosts. We felt it all and we loved every moment of feeling spoilt and special. Thank you for providing the most amazing place to retreat with a group of wahine to hold space for them all. A place to be renewed, energized and loved. We look forward to returning to this piece of paradise❤️

  • I've had the pleasure of visiting Wild Forest Estate as an individual and as the host of a 6-night yoga retreat. Both experiences were so unique and incredible. Wild Forest is the unlike many of my other New Zealand stops. It's truly so quiet, untouched, and immersive. While I was there, I visited the dune-y beaches to the north, hiked Manganui Bluff and walked along Aranga Beach, visited the Waipoua Forest in the daytime and evening, enjoyed massages in the neighborhood and had a ceremony with Maori healers, swam in Kai Iwi lakes, took and restored with walks along the property and neighborhood. And even beyond that, Joanna + Nigel were such a highlight of my experience. These two humans are so warm + welcoming. It's beyond a typical Airbnb or Bed & Breakfast experience. Wild Forest Estate feels like coming home. Be back soon!

The 240 sqm building can sleep up to 12 guests.

We often run it as two seperate apartments.

The Sunday School and The Warehouse. They are divided by a bunk room that creates an extra sound and privacy barrier between the two apartments.

There are two sets of double doors that connect the bunk room to either end of the building to form the larger retreat space.

The land is divided into 3 seperate titles.
